Can we build better? Challenges with geospatial and financial accessibility in the Caribbean. Illustrative case
Ellianne J dos Santos Rubio, Chrystal Calderon, Annegien Boeykens, Kee B Park
Journal of Neurosurgery
The Caribbean is a region bounded by the Caribbean Sea, which is rich in diversity and culture. The differences within the Caribbean region extend across financial statuses, healthcare policies, spoken languages, and socio-political philosophies. Within the medical healthcare services, deficiencies are noted in the majority of Caribbean nations in terms of access to neurosurgical care.
Neurosurgical Education Using Cadaver-Free Brain Models and Augmented Reality: First Experiences from a Hands-On Simulation Course for Medical Students
Ibrahim E. Efe, Emre Çinkaya, Leonard D. Kuhrt, Melanie M. T. Bruesseler, Armin Mührer-Osmanagic
Medicina 2023, 59(10), 1791; https://doi.org/10.3390/medicina59101791
Background and Objectives: Neurosurgery has been underrepresented in the medical school curriculum. Advances in augmented reality and 3D printing have opened the way for early practical training through simulations. We assessed the usability of the UpSurgeOn simulation-based training model and report first experiences from a hands-on neurosurgery course for medical students.
Training models and simulators for endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery: a systematic review
Giacomo Santona, Alba Madoglio, Davide Mattavelli, Mario Rigante, Marco Ferrari, Liverana Lauretti, Pierpaolo Mattogno, Claudio Parrilla, Pasquale De Bonis, Jacopo Galli, Alessandro Olivi, Marco Maria Fontanella, Antonio Fiorentino, Mauro Serpelloni, Francesco Doglietto
Neurosurgical Review (2023) 46:248 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10143-023-02149-3
Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery is a novel surgical technique requiring specific training. Different models and simulators have been recently suggested for it, but no systematic review is available…
Benchtop simulation of the retrosigmoid approach: Validation of a surgical simulator and development of a task-specific outcome measure score
Simon C Williams, Razna Ahmed, Joseph Darlington Davids, Jonathan P Funnell, John Gerrard Hanrahan, Hugo Layard Horsfall, William Muirhead, Federico Nicolosi, Lewis Thorne, Hani J Marcus, Patrick Grover
World Neurosurg X. 2023 Jun 24;20:100230. doi: 10.1016/j.wnsx.2023.100230. eCollection 2023 Oct.
Neurosurgical training is changing globally. Reduced working hours and training opportunities, increased patient safety expectations, and the impact of COVID-19 have reduced operative exposure. Benchtop simulators enable trainees to develop surgical skills in a controlled environment. We aim to validate a high-fidelity simulator model (RetrosigmoidBox, UpSurgeOn) for the retrosigmoid approach to t
A synthetic model simulator for intracranial aneurysm clipping: validation of the UpSurgeOn AneurysmBox
Razna Ahmed, William Muirhead, Simon C. Williams, Biswajoy Bagchi, Priyankan Datta, Priya Gupta, Carmen Salvadores Fernandez, Jonathan P. Funnell, John G. Hanrahan, Joseph D. Davids, Patrick Grover, Manish K. Tiwari, Mary Murphy, Hani J. Marcus
ORIGINAL RESEARCH article. Front. Surg., 31 May 2023. Sec. Neurosurgery. Volume 10 – 2023 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fsurg.2023.1185516
In recent decades, the rise of endovascular management of aneurysms has led to a significant decline in operative training for surgical aneurysm clipping. Simulation has the potential to bridge this gap and benchtop synthetic simulators aim to combine the best of both anatomical realism and haptic feedback. The aim of this study was to validate a synthetic benchtop simulator for aneurysm…
Assessing the impact of neurosurgery and neuroanatomy simulation using 3D non-cadaveric models amongst selected African medical students
Berjo Dongmo Takoutsing, Ubraine Njineck Wunde, Yvan Zolo, Geneviève Endalle, Dieunedort Arnold Menga Djaowé, Léopoldine Sybile Ngoune Tatsadjieu, Ines Miste Zourmba, Aminatou Dadda, Roland Ndouh Nchufor, Cyrille Duquesne Nkouonlack, Ernestine Renée Atangana Bikono, Jean Paul Oumarou Magadji, Casimir Fankem, Alain Bertrand Tchoupo Jibia, Ignatius Esene
Front Med Technol. 2023 May 4;5:1190096. doi: 10.3389/fmedt.2023.1190096. eCollection 2023.
Laboratory dissections are essential to acquire practical skills to perform neurosurgical procedures. Despite being traditionally done on cadavers, they are often unavailable and suffer from cultural barriers in the African context. Non-cadaveric UpSurgeOn neurosurgery models have been developed to bridge this barrier, providing an almost similar experience with the human body. This study…
